Антонин,

Thank you again for introducing me to the Parish Church and bringing me as your guest at Easter Sunday services. I know it’s not your ‘Главная традиция’ but it felt jolly good to observe, and with someone of like-minded faith, what.

At Mr Pontner’s invitation, I went to see him at the Ministry yesterday. There were some formalities of parchment to fill out against my starting appointment. It struck me as we spoke that many of Mr Pontner’s pronouncements seemed to have been made on the assumption that I would join Our Lord’s Council relatively soon after finishing at Hogwarts.

I do hope he’s correct in his estimation of me, but I left feeling somewhat disconcerted and not entirely sure why. This morning it came to me that it’s been weeks since you’ve mentioned arranging my formal introductions to Our Lord’s Court. In fact, I believe it not unfair to say that since Hydra’s mishap, you’ve been silent on the subject which has been much of our preoccupation up until that time.

Я знаю, что разочарован вас, сэр. I know that in the past you’ve cautioned patience and sincerity and good faith that I might prove myself worthy in the Lestranges’ eyes. Hydra and I defied that well sound advice. I do still believe our imprudence was, in fact, the only way that we would ever have been allowed to marry, nor can I honestly tell you I regret our decision. I regret only that having confided in you, I might now have somehow jeopardised your good opinion of me, and the future which that good opinion might make possible.

If you were to ask me which outcome I desire more: a life with Hydra or a life in service to the Lord Protector, it would be entirely deceitful to claim the latter. As you know, I never dreamed I might be worthy of membership on the Council, and only your encouragement has caused me to think otherwise. My love for Hydra, on the other hand, is unshakeable, no matter how many times I have tried, for her good and for mine, to set it aside. I believe my love for her is what makes it possible to reach my own potential, in point of fact. Without it, I would be a poor candidate for any mentor. It is singularly ironic that the force which propels me to achieve greatness in the الفنون النبيلة may also be the reason I am found wanting those qualities befitting a Councilwizard. So if I may only have one thing or the other, then I must admit there is really no question which I choose. Only if that is the choice now before me, I humbly beg you to tell me without equivocation, so that I may adjust my expectations accordingly.

Regardless of your answer, I hope that I continue to be useful as your clerk and that you will continue to utilise me in that capacity. I can confidently promise that you will detect no change in my commitment to assisting you and serving Hogwarts through that important work.

In the hope that there is something I can do to restore your faith in me, I remain,

Твой любящий студент,

Джастин Финч-Флетчли

Miss Greengrass,

I say, I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing difficulties in Defence and Noble Arts lessons. As you said, the salle is only open to those students pursuing their N.E.W.T. in the subjects, and I regret to say I would not consider trying to sway Professors Dolohov and Desai otherwise.

I'm jolly well flattered that you thought of asking me to tutor you, what. It's a wise choice to seek assistance before one's marks show that one's struggling. Unfortunately, my own course load and the additional work I'm doing for the Headmaster do take almost all my available time. I could not possibly do justice to your request. However, I can without hesitation recommend Councilwitch Lestrange as a tutor. One could not ask for a better instructor, what, particularly as she is a year ahead of you and in your own House, besides.

I've taken the liberty of including her here, to alert her that you may be asking for her assistance. I assure you there is no finer choice, but should you for some reason require a 7th-year student to tutor you, then our Head Boy, Moon, also did exceptionally well on his O.W.L, and in his marks last year, as did Sally-Anne Perks. Either I am sure would be willing to provide you with extra help.

I say, best of luck in improving your marks. I'm jolly well sorry I could not be of more service.

Cordially,

-Finch-Fletchley

Hullo, Wife.

I don't suppose you're awake at this hour.

It's one of those times where if we were really able to live as a married couple, I'd come home in the dead of night and you'd be sleeping sound and I could curl round you and feel you breathing and that would make everything all right, what.

As it is I've got to make do with Jack. And he's not much in the mood to be cuddled, tonight, I'm afraid. Too hot, probably.

I say, three days and we'll be on the train. I can wait. I promise I shan't even embarrass us both when I do see you.

I'll be all right. I only wanted to tell you I love you.

Always your,

-Justin

Dux,

How are you? Have you noticed anything different since Wednesday night?

I think that 'standard pureblood binding package' that chap recommended has affected a few things.

The wards on the flat became--bally well unreliable, what. And then this morning, at the Ouroboros, things felt quite different. I say, some of the spells one has to cast to get through that course...! There's a section where all the spells are somewhat murky in nature (or what Professor Dolohov would call 'noble.') I came all over warm inside, what, almost like I'd had a sip of jolly good Scotch or a rich brandy. Others were...more powerful than usual.

The thing is, have you ever been to Ouroboros? Visitors have to perform a spell to be recorded, what. A sort of magical identity test or password. Luckily I'd never been but if you have done, with one or both of your parents, the spell might register somewhat differently now.

Of course, I suppose now that you've the Mark you're eligible for a full membership in your own right, what, so perhaps that doesn't matter.

At any rate, I thought right away that the flat warding might have been because of the binding spells, but of course I didn't want Ron to know there was a possibility. I let him think it was the landlord casting a dodgy spell. But then when I got to the club this morning I was certain that's what's been affecting me. What else could it be?

Also, Professor Dolohov has invited me to spend Thursday mornings this summer, training. I know his house has wards similar to our flat's, only more exacting, so I've decided I'd better find spells that can tamper with one's magical signature, if you follow me. That way if he makes any sort of comment I shall be prepared.

I don't know if you've had any incidents but in case, I wanted you to be prepared, too.

Oh, and what's more, I'm sleeping soundly for the first time in ages--and I don't think it's all because of Jack.

I do miss you but...it feels like I can feel you, if you follow me. I hope I don't sound jolly well soppy, putting it like that. I hope you've felt the same because, if you have done, then you really can't be completely alone. You'll know I'm always there with you.

I'll never stop loving you, no matter what people tell us is right or proper. And knowing that we have this, that we share this bond--I feel certain we can do whatever we need to do to win.

I love you, Mrs Finch-Fletchley.

Finnigan,

I say, are you certain you want the section on identifying and neutralising protections in the field? I've already got some notes on the disruption of the common methods used to guard wizards working on complex or collaborative spells during melees. I'd be willing to draft it if you'd prefer, what--I mean to say, if you've other responsibilities for the Council challenges.

Patil, the same goes for the footnotes. I can put them in almost as easily as get you the list of sources. I'm quite finished with the bulk of the assignment. Zabini's already approved the draft for his section as well.

Professor,

Thank you again for the loan of the books and for the pleasant afternoon's conversation last week. I'm quite enjoying the D'Angier-LeBrun, what; his depictions of the use of battle magic on a mid-19th century campaign are jolly well evocative. And it's been some time since I had a chance to read in French. I've gone through the first three exercises on the Arabic figures, as well. I'm afraid I've not yet started Norton's Impractical Duellist but I expect to get to it by Thursday or Friday.

I hope you spent a pleasant Easter Sunday and Monday. (I had meant to look for a modest service in New London but didn't find one to my liking. I expect it's even more difficult for Eastern Orthodox, what. Perhaps by next year I shall have found a parish. Though I'm aware that's not fashionable in the Protectorate, it somehow feels wrong not to go a few times a year.)

I say, I had a question related to our project for the end of term. I was flipping through ibn Waḥšīya's Commentaries and I know we've not covered Essay #24 yet, but, as you know, our group work figures heavily on Calidus' instruction regarding the use of compulsion magic in combination with elemental intensifiers, so I thought I'd see what ibn Waḥšīya had to say on earth elements. But in the third section--I say, it seems as if it could be a translation irregularity. He's discussing the effect that certain wand woods (oak, thorn and yarrow, specifically) may have when the spell being attempted also includes metalliferous components (iron, for the most part, what, but also in certain cases silver or gold). Footnote number 17 mentions using quartz as a focus to balance the effect, but, I say, from the context, I wonder if it's more accurately translated as any sort of crystal? If it's an accurate translation then could you provide any insight as to why aiming the spell through quartz would produce a more reliable, powerfully-focused spell than, say, diamond or glass? (One can well understand why a coloured stone would taint the result, what, but it would seem that if clarity is desired, any type of clear crystal would do. Quartz is notoriously not perfectly clear, however, which makes one wonder why it would intensify the spell effect or nullify the interaction of iron with a wand of yarrow, for example.)

You see my confusion, what.

Perhaps there's another resource that addresses this same anomaly? If so, I should be very interested in reading it. I'm sure it will be pertinent to at least a portion of our survey.

Looking forward to your answer,

-Finch-Fletchley
