Dux,

Is he all right, your father? I mean to say, I'm sure he's bally well furious but did your mother harm him?

He's not demanding my head, I hope.

I've spent all day thinking, what. About what to do. I think we ought to talk sooner rather than later, though I still feel rather in a state of shock, as I'm sure you do.

Has Professor Slughorn told you what they intend? Professor Sprout talked to me this afternoon. And Professor Dolohov as well. I don't see that we've any choice but follow their precautions. It's that or bally well take Sirius up on his offer but--well, I say, we've stuck it out this far, what. Unless your father does intend to murder me, as he's threatened before.

Are you all right?

Hermione,

Thank you for the report.

Everyone: Obviously, we owe you all an apology and bally well more besides. Before either of us decides what steps to take, Hydra and I need to talk.

Please allow us a little privacy for that. I promise, neither of us will make an attempt to do so in person.

Hullo,

I say, have you two thought any more about how you'll respond to Avery's 'suggestion' about appearing to break up? I rather thought Draco's recommendation of using Harry was clever, though of course one understands how it rankles to even consider alternatives.

I've been thinking about the goal each of you have, what--Pansy, Hydra, Draco and yourself, Ron--and what Avery's goal must be. It seems there should be a way to appeal to him, what. I mean to say, he must have a high opinion of you, Ron, if he believes you're close enough to success that he thinks it's bally well time for you to free yourself for 'better options' (I say, sorry, Sally-Anne, that sounds jolly distasteful but surely that's Avery's way of seeing it). The point being that your performance so far has him interested enough to even bother offering his 'advice.' Always assuming he is interested, what, and not simply playing with you.

So perhaps if we think of something he wants more than he wants you to win, then you might be able to arrange it and thus avoid further harassment.

I suppose I've a vested interest in seeing you find a way 'round it, what. You see, your situation made me and Hydra think about what might happen--how we would go about it--if some similar demand were to be made of us. And now, that might....

Er.

See here, I...haven't told the rest of the Order yet, but the rumours are bally well true: Montague made sure that Professor Slughorn caught me leaving Hydra the other night--the last night of the detention challenge, that is to say. You remember, we started off so careful, what, but when there were no problems and no one said anything, I mean even when we slipped away to Edinburgh and no one--

I suppose we just...developed a habit. A selfish habit, I should say. One we ought to have known couldn't last. And now.... I'm not sure what Professor Slughorn's going to tell Hydra's parents but I'm sure he'll inform them of something. So it's--entirely likely that my 'bits' might be in a jar for the next year and a half. I might consider myself lucky if that's the only action Mr Lestrange takes.

I'm not looking for sympathy or anything--it was our gamble and we lost. Nothing more to it, what. There's no use worrying over what's going to happen. It's merely a matter of waiting for whatever's to be to jolly well get on with it.

Anyway, my point is really that it all makes your situation all the more injurious. If Hydra and I have lost our chance, then I'm dashed if I'll see anyone else lose theirs. I say, if there's a way for you two to stick together and yet not attract Avery's rancor, then please consider me at your disposal to help make it so.

Dux,

I've muffed it. I've bally well done it for us both, love.

Montague rousted Professor Slughorn out of bed, if you believe it, with some utter rubbish about how the honour of House Slytherin was besmirched.

I've a detention, of course. But if that weren't dashed well enough, Professor Slughorn hinted he might have to write your father.

I say, Montague might have thought about that when he decided to use me as his target. I'm jolly well not at fussed about the detention, what, it's the idea of what your father might do when he hears we've ignored his terms.

At least Professor Slughorn didn't seem to know about the ring. I say, I'm not dashed sure if that would have made things better or worse. I didn't wish to call it to his attention, though.

I'm sorry, sweetheart. On reflection I probably ought to have stayed instead of going back to my own dormitory. I don't doubt Professor Slughorn would not have been pleased to stake out the dungeons for nothing, what!

Blast and dash it. I wonder if we could convince him not to say anything.

Hullo, everyone,

I hope you've all had a pleasant Christmas, or as pleasant as possible under the circumstances. Christmas with the Jugsons was good, if a bit odd now and then, as it's bound to be.

But this has been a bally well interesting afternoon!

As Malfoy mentioned earlier, the Jugsons, Lestranges, Malfoys and Pennifolds have a luncheon every year on Boxing Day and the Jugsons brought me along. I say, it was quite a surprise to see Professor Dolohov, what! We were expecting Professors Lestrange and Sinistra but I'd rather believed it to be a family affair. I suppose Mr Malfoy does consider Professor Dolohov to be family. Mr Rosier was there and asked me how I've found the Protectorate as a citizen, what, but I noticed that he wasn't really listening to the answer. Also, apparently Finnigan usually comes as his ward but he wasn't along today. Mr Rosier said he's not been feeling well. That's not entirely true, we learned. Let me explain:

After luncheon, Hydra took me on a tour of her grandmother's house, mostly as an excuse to be alone together for a while. We got to the library, which is a snug little round room with a fireplace and a cosy sort of sitting area. And we thought we'd be safe there for a bit if we wanted to--well, to pass the time for a while, what.

But then we heard people approaching and Hydra pointed to the study off the library as a good place to go and collect ourselves. Only once we were inside, we realised two things: First, that there isn't any other door out except into the library; and second, that everyone on the other side of that door was a Councilwizard (or witch, her mother was along, too).

So we stayed and listened.

First off, as I said, it seems Finnigan's not ill, but Mr Rosier has been keeping him secluded at home, under some sort of potion. It sounded like a drugged sleep, Hydra said probably Dreamless Sleep but it could be even stronger than that, what, from the sound of it. No idea why, except that we thought we heard Mr Rosier say 'Only another day'--but that might have been two days, there was a pause and we couldn't hear. Then Professor Dolohov said--it had to have been him, what, because of the accent--that it was a terrible idea, as he'd never be 'ready' to do what was 'required of him' if he isn't properly prepared.

Well, then one of the other men asked if he could even do it if he were properly prepared, and they laughed. But Professor Dolohov and (I suppose it must have been Mr Rosier) said yes, they think he's capable, and anyway 'he'll have to be.'

Oh, someone asked if Mr Malfoy had had any more dealings with the Yaxleys. He said he spoke to Mr Yaxley and there aren't going to be any 'repercussions' - I say, I've no idea what was the matter between them but he seemed confident there was nothing to worry about - only then he added something like, 'except, of course, that he is even more fervent to do Our Lord's bidding.'

Well, Auror Lestrange said, 'He should have been in the first place!' and then they all started speaking and it was hard to hear but eventually Professor Dolohov asked Mr Malfoy if he were still willing to be his first acolyte for the ceremony, because he would think it no dishonour if he were not up to it and preferred 'Barty' (Auror Crouch, that must be) to assist in the primary and he’d get another second. Then Hydra recognised her uncle's voice (Professor Lestrange, I mean to say) and he said something that made them all laugh, and Professor Dolohov said, 'I can still out-duel you any day of the week,' and something in Russian that made them all laugh again. Mr Malfoy said no, that if he thought it would weaken him (meaning Professor Dolohov) too much, he ought to have Barty be the...something (Magus?)--and that he'd probably enjoy it more, anyway, which ought to make the ceremony that much more effective.

Then Auror Lestrange said that if that were the case, she and Barty ought to do it with Professor Dolohov assisting them, and make everyone ashamed to be in Our Lord's company.

They got quiet then. Eventually, Mr Lestrange asked if they thought He was serious about bringing in new blood, such as Pennifold or some of the others who've been looking for favour. They mentioned several people but no one was sure what He would do about them. Then they got on to the topic of people currently at school, what! We heard Draco’s name and Pansy’s, and we tried to listen to what Mr Malfoy had to say but he must have quashed the discussion about both of them, because the next name we heard them mention was Zabini, and after that whether Warrington or Montague were ready for it.

Of course, that put Professors Lestrange and Dolohov onto the whole duelling club mess, what, and Professor Dolohov in particular was flatly against any sort of recommendation for most of them, especially Teddy Nott, and including Crabbe and Goyle, at present. Sally-Anne, he did mention that he’s got his eye on you--and me, dash it, as potential recruits (though, I say, Auror Lestrange didn’t think much of either suggestion, which I thought bally well comforting).

Mr Lestrange changed the subject. He seemed to think that someone named Strangeweale might have had something to do with the attack, that there was an article in the paper that suggested it could have been someone who worked for him who levelled the platform. But Auror Lestrange said that was just nonsense made up to cover up for the Irish making it to British soil.

Mr Malfoy said yes, but that didn't change the fact that Strangeweale's a right plonker (he, er, didn't use those words, precisely) and that he feared for the realm if He couldn't be brought to see that Strangeweale's not trustworthy. He also mentioned that Glendower's an idiot and said something about Mr Thicknesse, but Mr Rosier defended him and said besides that now wasn't the time to be fragmenting among themselves.

Mr Malfoy told him that it wasn't that simple, when the 'new lot' were circling every day. He also said that these days, going to Court could be--something, but we think maybe it was 'as dangerous as'--being in the field fighting the 'insurgents.'

That was well shocking enough, but that got them on to the graffiti that had been scrawled on the Protectorate Hall at Mr Weasley's memorial service (did anyone get a look at it?) and how it was disgraceful and disrespectful and so on. (Mr Malfoy said something, and I'm sorry, Pansy, Ron, it wasn't altogether kind to Mr Weasley, what. I'll not repeat it here but--well, it's enough to say that we all know they didn't get on well.)

Just about then there was a knock and it was Mrs Malfoy and Mrs Black, coming to tell them it was time for pudding and brandy. So they all left, and we waited to make sure they were gone but then we had to leave, too, to come back to the table.

I say. Hermione, it sounded like the sort of thing the Wand Smugglers ought to hear, so I've tried to write it all down as soon as ever I could do. (Which took quite a long time, as you can see!) Hydra, have I left out anything we ought to include?

Hullo, love. How was History?

Defence, after lunch, what. I wonder if he'll go easy since he's got the duel tomorrow?

It's just occurred to me that even if Professor Raz is going to be busy fighting, the other people Professor Dolohov has invited probably include your uncle and maybe even your father. Has he said if he's going to see you tomorrow? I shouldn't wonder if Professor Dolohov asked your mother but do you think she'd attend?

But either way, I suppose there shall be someone from the Council, likely to carry news back if we're not careful, what? Best not sit together, then. Don't you think? Dash it.

Perhaps afterward, though? If you're not expected at a jolly old Malfoy tea or anything, we could work on Arithmancy before the YPL exercises.

I've been thinking about my birthday, like you said to do. All I can imagine wanting are silly things, things one can't get here anymore. I'd love a bally old packet of crisps now and then. But that's not a proper gift, what? Just a craving. And anyway, I don't care about presents so much as just being with you. (Though I do need a new jumper but that's not a request, what. I'll look at Gladrag's at the first Hogsmeade visit.) I am rather excited to turn 16, though. And to have someone to celebrate it with me, what?

Love,

-Justin

Hydra,

Stay in your Common Room tonight, will you?

I mean to say, don't go wandering until we know that Alecto Carrow's left the school. The rumour I've heard is that her brother's talking about your father, what? Let's not give her an excuse to get revenge on him by harming you.

-Justin
alt_justin: (Pardonnez-moi?)
Hullo, Dux,

How is that project going, then? Have you managed to figure anything out yet?

I say, if not, perhaps Sally-Anne might help without asking too many questions. From what I understand, she's well talented in Runes.

It might...speed things along. Not that I'm complaining but we must have been the only couple in Hogwarts who couldn't even snog on Valentine's Day, what?

Though it's been well grand waking up each morning to the photo. I've set it right next to my alarm, what? So it's almost the first thing I see every day and the last thing I look at when I put out the light. You do look well fetching in it and it's not just the robes. I say, I think we look a well handsome couple in point of fact. I'm glad you thought to ask whether there were photos of us both that simply weren't run in the papers. (Not that I mind being left out of the papers, what? I feel sure that would make our present situation much worse!)

Well. If you see me tomorrow and I've got red glitter all over my hair and robes blame Martin Pascal; he's been almost forcing those sweets of the Weasley twins' upon everyone. Can't think why he finds them dead hilarious, what? It's a good job Professor Froissart's down in London or he'd have us all doing detentions with your Mr Milland to clean up all the confetti!

Perhaps we could revise together tomorrow?

-Justin
alt_justin: (Je pense)
Hello,

Feeling better? Did you find anything? Have either of them said anything more to you?

I can't sleep at all. You?

I'm frightfully sorry, you know, that we had to get into hot water that way. But not sorry about the why, if you follow me.

I say, I'm rather surprised your uncle's helping us, though. Pleased, of course. But surprised.

Well, I suppose I ought to try to sleep. Perhaps I'll read about more ways to defeat an enemy without duelling him. I suspect I've not a chance against your uncle, what?

-Justin
alt_justin: (Serieux)
Hullo, all.

Listen, I might need some help in a few minutes.

I've not time to explain just at the moment, but Professor Lestrange has asked to see me. And, er, Hydra.

I think it'll be all right. But if we're not done and at supper in about, oh, say, thirty minutes, could one of you come up with some sort of excuse to interrupt us?

Much obliged, what.

-Justin
alt_justin: (Ca va?)
What ho, all,

I say, it was fun today, wasn't it?

Something interesting happened tonight, though. You may have noticed that Hydra's father wrote to her (and I'm well glad I thought not to send her a Private Message or to say anything improper, what!). Well, she told me that she's keeping the fact that we're dating secret from him. Which makes sense, I daresay, and it's fine with me for the time being, at any rate.

But then she scratched something out in her last reply to me. You know how she signs everything 'From, Hydra' but this time she started to write something else.

I think it was 'Love.'

I can't be sure. And I say, it doesn't necessarily mean anything, what? Because it's common enough to sign a letter 'With love' or 'Love,' just as one might use 'Sincerely' or 'Yours.'

Only. Hydra doesn't. Sign off that way, I mean.

So.

I'm not sure what to think, if you follow me.

Do you think she meant it but didn't want to be the first to say it? Or that she doesn't mean it and scratched it out so I wouldn't think she cares more than she does? Or was it just a mistake?

And what I told Padma about Valentine's? It's not true at all, of course. I only didn't wish her to pry where anyone might see the answer. But if Hydra doesn't want to continue--well, why would she lie to her father about me, what? Unless she thinks she's about to break things off and he never needs to know.

What do you think I ought to do?

-Justin

Good evening, Mr Lestrange:

I hope you don't object to my writing to you without a formal introduction but I wanted to ask your daughter something and I wanted to do it properly and get your permission first.

My name is Justin Finch-Fletchley and although I'm British-born, I am enrolled at Beauxbatons Academy, where I am currently a fourth-year. I have the honour of being one of the twenty-five students selected by Madame Maxime and Professor Froissart to attend Hogwarts this year for the Tri-Wizard Tournament.

Sir, I hope you understand that under ideal circumstances, I would send this note to Auror Lestrange as well as to yourself and your daughter. It is the limitations of the Private Message spell that permit me to choose only two recipients. My own family are very traditional so I thought it best to address her father. But it would be wrong not to include Miss Lestrange herself, as it's to do with her. So you see that's why I'm writing to you, sir, and to Hydra, and not as a slight against Mrs Lestrange in any way. Should you think it appropriate to share this request with her, please do so with my compliments.

I'm sure you have heard that there's to be a dance over the Christmas holidays, held at Hogwarts as part of the Tri-Wizard programme. Fourth-years and above are allowed to attend openly but third-years require an invitation. Mr Lestrange, with your permission, I should very much like to ask Miss Lestrange if she would attend as my guest.

You need not fear any misunderstanding on my part: I've been told that Miss Lestrange's long-term interests are committed elsewhere. However, I am given to understand that an offer of escort shan't be forthcoming from certain sources on this occasion. If I have been misinformed, I should be happy to step aside in his favour, since I am after all only a visitor. Meanwhile, though, if she were to consent, I should be glad to accompany her so that she may show herself to her best effect.

Of course, if Miss Lestrange cannot or does not wish to accept, I shall not be offended in the slightest. She or you need only reply in any way you see fit: below, by owl or at least in Hydra's case, in person if she prefers.

I shall leave my request in both your hands, then, and remain

Yours Sincerely,

-Justin Finch-Fletchley
