Good evening, Mr Lestrange:
I hope you don't object to my writing to you without a formal introduction but I wanted to ask your daughter something and I wanted to do it properly and get your permission first.
My name is Justin Finch-Fletchley and although I'm British-born, I am enrolled at Beauxbatons Academy, where I am currently a fourth-year. I have the honour of being one of the twenty-five students selected by Madame Maxime and Professor Froissart to attend Hogwarts this year for the Tri-Wizard Tournament.
Sir, I hope you understand that under ideal circumstances, I would send this note to Auror Lestrange as well as to yourself and your daughter. It is the limitations of the Private Message spell that permit me to choose only two recipients. My own family are very traditional so I thought it best to address her father. But it would be wrong not to include Miss Lestrange herself, as it's to do with her. So you see that's why I'm writing to you, sir, and to Hydra, and not as a slight against Mrs Lestrange in any way. Should you think it appropriate to share this request with her, please do so with my compliments.
I'm sure you have heard that there's to be a dance over the Christmas holidays, held at Hogwarts as part of the Tri-Wizard programme. Fourth-years and above are allowed to attend openly but third-years require an invitation. Mr Lestrange, with your permission, I should very much like to ask Miss Lestrange if she would attend as my guest.
You need not fear any misunderstanding on my part: I've been told that Miss Lestrange's long-term interests are committed elsewhere. However, I am given to understand that an offer of escort shan't be forthcoming from certain sources on this occasion. If I have been misinformed, I should be happy to step aside in his favour, since I am after all only a visitor. Meanwhile, though, if she were to consent, I should be glad to accompany her so that she may show herself to her best effect.
Of course, if Miss Lestrange cannot or does not wish to accept, I shall not be offended in the slightest. She or you need only reply in any way you see fit: below, by owl or at least in Hydra's case, in person if she prefers.
I shall leave my request in both your hands, then, and remain
Yours Sincerely,
-Justin Finch-Fletchley
